Tarot Code of Ethics

I swear to uphold the integrity of the Tarot in all of its uses. Whether I am using the Cards for inner guidance or divination, I will always defend the principals of the Cards. The truth that they speak will be used as guidance for me in my everyday life. I will see the ‘future’ that the Cards reveal to me as a possible reality. It will represent the consequences (good or bad) of my decision to travel a certain path of life.

I will also interpret the wisdom of the Cards to other people, should they request it. In this function, I will serve as a conduit for the Cards’ words. The Cards will speak to the person through me, but I will not offer personal advice that would best be answered by a counselor, nor will I give advice that is better left to a financial advisor or physician. I will merely point things out that the Cards are hinting at. I may offer suggestions to the client concerning how the Cards could manifest themselves in their life, but I will not tell them that the Cards definitely mean something. I will let the Cards manifest themselves in the client’s life.

I will not tell a person what I think they should do. When a client asks me, I will simply respond to them by telling them to look into their heart for the answer. The Cards will help of course, but if a client is still in need of guidance, their Self is the next best source. I can not take responsibility for another person’s life, so I will try to show them how they can take responsibility for themselves. Also, if a client argues with me over the meanings of the Cards, I will not argue back. The Cards have no limit to the number of meanings that they have. If a client’s Self speaks to him/her and interprets the Cards differently, then that is what they should listen to. Of course, if they are totally off base, I will advise them what the true meaning is, and I’ll tell them that if they would like to interpret it differently, they should keep the "accepted" definition in mind. If a client tells me that they intend to kill themself, then I will have to ask them to talk it over with their Self first. They will have forced my hand, but before they do anything drastic, I will ask them to look into the Cards as a conduit to the voice of their Self. If a matter was this serious, I would not charge the client.

When I am reading for a paying client, I will only charge them what is fair. I will not charge an excessive amount of money for a poor reading. Due to this, I will do everything in my power to make sure that the client is satisfied with the quality of the reading. If the client’s question is not answered in some way, then I will continue to work until they feel that they do know what to do. I will never tell the client what to do. I will only let the Cards offer their insight and guidance. Only when the client feels that they know what the Cards mean will the reading be done. No client shall leave a reading feeling more confused than when they came into it. If a client indicates that they would like to date me, then I’ll handle that based on the situation. It would be a personal matter, and it would have no affect on the reading. I would read the Cards the same way for a total stranger as I would for my family. Therefore, I won’t let something like that interfere with the quality of the reading.

If the Cards hold a very dismal outlook for the client, I will have to inform them of that. Each Card has it’s ups and downs, but if in a case where the Cards are reflecting mostly negative aspects, I’ll have to inform the client that it is a warning. I’ll remind them that the Cards only show the possible future. Theirs is the future that will occur should conditions remain the same. It will then be up to the client to determine what they want to do to change things (Jacta est Alea!). They can even pose that question to the Cards in hopes of further insight. The one thing I won’t do is "beef up" the Cards so that their message is lost. One can not change if one is not aware of a problem.

I swear by my Cards, God, and my Higher Self to keep these values close to my heart. I will continually use them and be reminded of them whenever I read the Cards or use any other Oracle. I also ask my Cards, God, Higher Self, and all the other Spirits that embrace my life to help me keep these values sacred. So Mote it Be!
